Solutions

If you cannot measure it, how do you know if the solution is working?

To return to the safe operating space – where the planet’s resilience, stability, and life-support systems are not at risk – we need to see the big picture: how the planetary boundaries interact and how to measure whether solutions are working. There is no single fix for all boundaries; but multiple groups are working on evidence based solutions. Find the solutions that fit for you in the following sections.

Note

While not every solution is applicable to every situation, consider these as a menu that works in many different contexts.

“We know that solving the planet crisis is not utopia. It's not fantasy. We have the solutions for a secure, stable future for humanity"

Johan Rockström, Director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research

The Planetary Boundaries Science Lab (PBScience Lab) turns Earth system science into practical pathways for sustainability. It not only tracks where humanity is overshooting ecological limits but also develops strategies to bring us back into a safe operating space.

1. Monitoring & Early Warning

  • Tracks the nine planetary boundaries in regular updates with the latest data from earth observation and analysis assisted by AI.
  • Provides early warning signals when boundaries are close to being breached, helping societies act before crises escalate.
Monitoring Early Warning

2. Designing Solution Pathways

  • In combination with PIK Potsdam we are developing planetary solutions—integrated strategies for climate mitigation, biodiversity protection, sustainable food systems, and circular economies and global scale.
  • Offers scenario modeling to show how different policies or technologies can restore balance.
Designing Solution Pathways

3. Policy & Governance Support

  • Supplies scientific evidence to international negotiations (UN climate talks, biodiversity summits).
  • Helps governments design policies aligned with Earth system limits, ensuring development doesn’t destabilize the planet.
Designing Solution Pathways

4. Collaboration & Innovation

  • Works with businesses, NGOs, and scientists to co-create solutions like regenerative agriculture, renewable energy transitions, and pollution reduction.
  • Encourages cross-disciplinary innovation, linking natural sciences with economics and social sciences.
Designing Solution Pathways

5. Public Engagement

  • Produces visual tools, reports, and films (like the Netflix film: Breaking Boundaries and our youtube channel https://www.youtube.com/@PlanetaryBoundariesScience ) to make science accessible.
  • Encourages cross-disciplinary innovation, linking natural sciences with economics and social sciences.
Designing Solution Pathways

The Planetary Boundaries Science lab will be developing planetary boundary wide solutions in the near future with an aim to have localised impact assessment so that stakeholders can truly get a measure of which action is having positive impacts.

Get in Touch

Amid the planetary crisis, the Planetary Boundaries Initiative (PBI) brings together diverse perspectives from scientists, policymakers, and civil society to develop collaborative solutions for environmental risks. The PBI's Planetary Boundaries Analyzer (PBAnalyzer) integrates multi-stakeholder insights with AI to deliver tailored decision-support solutions for different communities. This multi-perspective approach ensures solutions are both scientifically rigorous and practically relevant across institutions and disciplines. The PBI is open for collaborations.
